Interns Working Conditions

Impaired Intern due to Health reasons means a mental or physical condition, or the abuse of or dependence on chemical substances, which effects the competence attitude, judgement or performance of a student. Ministry of Health shall pay housing allowance to interns who will enter in to an individual preferred housing contract.


Interns Working Conditions
  • Should work 40 hours per work week.
  • Commuted overtime should not exceed 20 hours per work week.
  • 80 hours overtime should not be exceeded in a four-week cycle.
  • Continuous service should not exceed 26 hours. Interns should be relieved of duty after this period.
  • Should not work full weekend, unless there is a 12-hour break during the weekend.
  • Not to be on duty every second night.

After hour duty, it is expected of interns to work overtime as part of service delivery during emergencies. The interns should be part of the post intake rounds for training and teaching purposes. Again, it is expected of interns to be on duty for a maximum of 80 hours per week and that overtime was part of service delivery and lastly, night duty is a valid and essential learning experience where competencies and skills development could take place and exposure to very specific aspects of medicine was possible which differ from the normal day-time exposure. As for leave benefits, more than 2 months of leave in the two-year period shall result in extension of training in domains where training requirements are not met and leave application forms will be available from Human Resource Manager at the Rotation Facility. The original is submitted to Internship Coordinator, copy to Rotation Supervisor.

The following arrangements regarding leave during the two-year internship training program shall apply, there is an annual leave 22 days, preferable to be taken during the four-month rotations to a maximum of two weeks in a domain and total leave should not exceed 2 months since an intern should receive at least 22 months supervised training. Coming to sick leave of 12 days per year, an Intern shall be entitled to sick leave on full pay for up to 12 days and thereafter to sick leave on half pay for up to 24 days in each period of 12 months' continuous employment, entitlements of sick leave may not be carried forward from one year to another and an Intern shall produce a certificate of incapacity or proof of attendance signed by a registered medical practitioner. In the case of sick leave extending beyond six working days, the employer may require an intern to be examined by another registered medical practitioner, with the expenses of the examination and any travel expenses to be borne by the employer.


Maternity Leave
  • Three (3) months and extension of training by 3 months will be required.
  • An Intern shall give notice of her anticipated delivery date, by submitting to Internship Coordinator a written certificate signed by a medical officer certifying confinement date taking place within six weeks from the date of the certificate.
  • Intern shall be released from work six weeks before her confinement, and return to work six weeks immediately after her confinement.
  • After delivery, employer shall immediately be notified with a written certificate signed by a medical officer certifying the date of confinement.
  • In the case where illness arise out of her confinement and is consequently unfit to return to work after six weeks, the employee shall return to work eight weeks immediately after her confinement.
  • Period elapsing between the anticipated date of confinement and the actual confinement; the period of statutory maternity leave to be taken after confinement shall not be reduced on that account.

Family responsibility leave of 10 days/year whereby a maximum of 5 days for death of a direct family member or spouse and a maximum of 5 days for illness of direct family. Locums or moonlighting ILLEGAL and no study leave is awarded to interns. Impaired intern due to health reasons means a mental or physical condition, or the abuse of or dependence on chemical substances, which effects the competence attitude, judgement or performance of a student. On-call facilities, there will be satisfactory sleeping on-call-rooms for interns. Additionally, meals should be available for persons on emergency duty, especially at night and on-call facilities must be comfortable, clean, near the call point with adequate utilities and secure.

Transport need not be provided for interns except where the intern has to travel to different facilities.

  • In the event of the intern using his/her own transport, then this should be agreed upon with the management in writing and the applicable tariffs will apply with due aion/logbooks on a monthly basis being submitted to management.
  • The intern to ensure that he/she has appropriate vehicle insurance cover for business and private use.
  • The facilities offering internship training should have a budget line for the above.
