The objective of LeBoHA Internship training program is to create a Basic Doctor, physicians of first contact for the community in the primary care setting both in urban as well as rural areas of our country
The basic doctor must function as a clinician, leader, communicator, life-long learner and a professional who is responsive and accountable to the patients and the community. Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire skills under supervision so that he/she may become capable of functioning independently.
Our internship program provides opportunities to the interns to further develop their knowledge, skills and professional thinking.
Lesotho medical and dental internship program is a period of supervised training of newly qualified doctors and dentists before they are registered by the Lesotho Medical Dental and Pharmacy Council as independent practitioners.
The duration of medical internship is 24-months, whereas that of dental is 12-months. The goal of the internship is to have competent and safe practitioners with increased understanding of and experience in patient care, clinical skills and professionalism. The design of the program follows the protocols of Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA).
This is achieved through supervision of rotations in different disciplines, at the different internship rotation sites. The monitoring and evaluation internship framework is utilized to ensure successful internship program.
Since its inception in April 2019, 179 medical and dental interns have been enrolled, and 131 have graduated from the program. Currently, there are 43 medical and dental interns still enrolled.

Criteria for successful completion of the Internship
Completion of the internship programme is attained by successfully completing all eleven (11) rotations. This is achieved by completing the following;
1. An internship workbook: Interns are required to complete a set of clinical procedures and treatment practices, which are then reviewed and signed off by their rotation supervisor. The supervisor's main responsibility is to ensure that the intern is competent in performing their duties, rather than simply verifying that all workbooks have been filled out. It's worth noting that the number of procedures required to achieve the same level of skill may vary between interns.
2. A supervisor evaluation form: where the intern’s core competencies are marked 1-5 against criteria in the following areas:
The duration of a medical internship is 24 months, whereas the duration of a dental internship is 12 months.
