A specialist physician trained to provide health care services for all individuals regardless of age, sex or type of health problem; provide primary and continuing care for entire families within their communities; address physical, psychological and social problems; coordinate comprehensive health care services with other specialists as needed.
Registrars must have completed a first degree in medicine and be registered as a Medical Officer with the Lesotho Medical, Dental, Pharmacy Council. A valid retention certification with LMDPC is required.
Experience working as a medical officer is an added benefit.
Registrars are based at hospitals across Lesotho.
Registrars continue working at their employment sites throughout the course of training. Permission from the employer is required at the start of training to ensure that the registrar will be adequately supported during their training.
Registrars complete two academic modules annually. Teaching is primarily conducted during didactic teaching sessions with assignments submitted online. Presentations are also made by registrars on their learning at subsequent teaching sessions.
Registrars complete three academic projects. During the first two years, a community-oriented primary care (COPC) project and a quality improvement (QI) project is completed. The projects are components of modules on COPC and QI. During the third and fourth years, a primary care research project is completed. There are two modules on primary care research to guide the process. Monthly virtual work-in-progress calls are held to support registrars throughout the research process.
Registrars also complete six clinical rotations each year. Rotations are completed at primary places of employment and at specialty training sites.
